IANOS – IntegrAted SolutioNs for the DecarbOnization and Smartification of Islands

ABSTRACT:
Most EU islands have specific energy-related challenges such as high dependence on fossil fuels or energy import from mainland, seasonality of demand and the continuously increasing non-controllable penetration of Renewable Energy Systems. These challenges make a more burdensome and expensive pathway to ensure energy security and grid resilience in islands compared to mainland.
IANOS adopts an Island Energy Transition Strategy focused on energy efficiency, grid support for high Renewable Energy Systems penetration, decarbonization through electrification and support from non-emitting fuels. At the same time, Local Energy Communities in the islands are empowered.
IANOS has a budget of € 8.8 M (co-financed by the EU under the H2020 program). With a duration of 48 months and a consortium made up of 34 partners in 9 different countries, the project validation takes place in 2 islands and its evaluation in 3 other islands from Portugal, the Netherlands, Italy, France, and Greece.
