UPPER – Unleashing the Potential of Public transport in EuRope
PROGRAMME: EU Horizon Europe
ABSTRACT:
During the last few years, air quality has significantly decreased in European cities due to the emission of harmful gases, especially from private vehicles. It is known that 40 million people are exposed to high levels of pollutants which, when breathed in large quantities, can lead to pneumonia, cancer and other breathing diseases. Public transport provides an opportunity to address this situation.
UPPER’s mission is to enhance and reinforce the role of public transport as the backbone of sustainable urban mobility, in line with the Cities Mission objective. The project implements in 10 European cities more than 80 measures aimed at achieving an attractive, efficient, reliable, safe, inclusive and affordable public transport system, increasing its use more than 30% and user satisfaction more than 25%. UPPER also develops a set of 7 IT tools that support cities in the implementation of its measures.
UPPER has a budget of 23.5 M€ and a duration of 48 months. With a consortium of 40 partners, under the technical coordination of ETRA, the project is validated in the cities of Valencia, Rome, Île de France, Oslo, Mannheim, Lisbon, Leuven, Budapest, Thessaloniki, and Hannover.
