airLUISA “Advanced system for comprehensive monitoring of emissions and air quality in urban environments in Valencian Community.”

Despite considerable progress in recent decades, air pollution remains one of the leading environmental causes of premature deaths both in Valencia (800,000 inhabitants) and in the EU as a whole. As in most large urban areas, Valencia is challenged to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while promoting its economic development.

In response to this challenge, the airLUISA project aims to use innovative tools based on information and communication technologies to monitor in real time the local activity of the most polluting sector in urban areas, the transport, through a network of sensors already installed. Data collected together with remote sensing data, weather forecasts and air quality monitoring stations are used to generate real-time air quality maps. All data is processed by a Big Data platform which, thanks to a balanced scorecard and a dashboard, helps public decision-makers to promote sustainable measures based on a set of KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).

The airLUISA project develops a tool that produces local emission inventories and air quality maps while facilitating government transparency to increase public acceptance of measures taken to improve air quality.

CALL: AVI STRATEGIC PROJECTS IN COOPERATION

PROJECT REFERENCE: INNEST/2021/75

ORGANISATION: FUNDED BY AGENCIA VALENCIANA DE LA INNOVACIÓN (AVI)

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION PERIOD: 01/06/2021 to 30/06/2023

PROJECT OBJECTIVES:

The main purpose of airLUISA project is to develop a balanced scorecard including its frontend (dashboard) as a public decision-making tool for the control of GHG emissions and other pollutant emissions to improve air quality in urban environments, taking the city of Valencia as a first example, with the aim of extending and applying this methodology to other large cities in the Valencian Community.
